Costa del Sol

Meaning ‘Sun Coast’ in English, the Costa del Sol is world-renowned as one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations. It is a region comprised of the coastal towns along the Mediterranean Sea in the province of Malaga, part of the community of Andalusia.

It’s most well-known cities and resorts are Marbella, Malaga, Puerto Banus, Torremolinos, and Fuengirola. Known for year-round warm temperatures and with approximately 3,000 sunshine hours a year, a holiday to the Costa del Sol is always sure to deliver a slice of Spanish culture and a laid-back getaway.

It’s eternal ‘pueblos blancos’ or white villages are scattered throughout the Sierra Blanca mountain range, which provides an idyllic backdrop to the flashy beach resorts.

Before the economic and touristic boom of the 1960s and 70s, only small fishing villages could be found along this stretch of the Mediterranean Coast, today filled with hotels, resorts, leisure amenities, up-market ports, and glamorous promenades, rendering the area somewhat unrecognizable.

Andalusian culture has remained despite the influence of tourism and can be enjoyed in the local cuisine, the numerous cultural festivities and fiestas and the traditional chiringuito beach huts, a hallmark of the Spanish beach, allowing visitors on holiday in the Costa del Sol to enjoy authentic cuisine or drinks with their toes in the sand whilst admiring the glistening Mediterranean waters. It might be Spain’s busiest holiday destination, but its charms are timeless.
