Brasov is the capital and most populated city of the Brasov district. It is situated in the southeast of the historic region of Transylvania, in the centre of the country, 166 kilometres from the national capital of Bucharest. It was given the title of Martyr City, for the participation of its citizens in the Romanian Revolution of 1989. From 1950 to 1960 the city was known as Stalin City. The Poiana Brasov ski resort is just 12 kilometres from the city centre, boasting a highly developed infrastructure for various winter sports. The patron of the city is Saint Mary. Her statue is on top of the Black Church in the town. Brasov was historically one of the most important, powerful and thriving cities in the region. Its geographical position and infrastructure, permit the development of a great deal of economic and cultural activities.
