Most of the buildings work today as museums, art galleries, craft shops or coffee shops.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Edo_period_Architecture\"><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\">Edo period Architecture<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"notranslate\">Enter one of the old houses whose architecture has hardly changed since the Edo period, such as the house of the\u00a0Kusakabe\u00a0family\u00a0(Kusakabe<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">Mingeikan) or the\u00a0Yoshijima\u00a0family\u00a0(Yoshijima-ke), the\u00a0Hida\u00a0archaeological museum<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">Minzoku<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">Kokokan, the\u00a0Hirata\u00a0craft museum<\/span><span class=\"notranslate\">Kinenkan\u00a0or to the\u00a0Fujii\u00a0Art and Craft Gallery<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">Bijutsu<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">Mingei-kan.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">More than the exhibitions that we can find there, what really is worthwhile is being able\u00a0to\u00a0enter such old houses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"See_the_Hida_temple_Kokubun_-ji\"><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\">See the\u00a0Hida\u00a0temple<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">Kokubun\u00a0-ji<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"notranslate\">Visit the\u00a0Hida\u00a0temple<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">Kokubun\u00a0-Ji, one of the oldest in the city (it was built in the 8th century). It is easily visible from anywhere around Takayama thanks to the needle at the top of its three-storied pagoda.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">In the courtyard of the temple, which is always very quiet you can find a ginkgo tree more than 1,200 years old.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Takayama_Shrine\"><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\">Takayama Shrine<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"notranslate\">Visit the\u00a0Takayama\u00a0or\u00a0Takayama\u00a0sanctuary<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">Jinja, which served as the office of the\u00a0Takayama\u00a0government\u00a0in the Edo period. Back then the city was directly controlled by the shogun because of its valuable forest resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Discover_sake\"><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\">Discover sake<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"notranslate\">Discover more about the world of sake, local\u00a0Takayama\u00a0specialty, visiting some of the same factories that can be found in the old town, easily recognizable by their large\u00a0Sugiyama\u00a0or balls of cedar branches above the entrance. Another little detail that will make this a different trip to Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sakurayama_shrine_Hachimangu\"><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\">Sakurayama\u00a0shrine<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">Hachimangu<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"notranslate\">A visit to the\u00a0Sakurayama\u00a0Shrine<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">Hachimangu is always worth it. it is the sanctuary that organizes the famous autumn festival of\u00a0Takayama\u00a0or\u00a0Hachiman<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">Matsuri, which is celebrated every year on October 9 and 10.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"notranslate\">Temples are a big deal here. Cross the grand entrance door of the\u00a0Takayama\u00a0temple<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">Betsuin, headquarters of the Buddhist sect Jodo\u00a0Shinshuu<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">Otani\u00a0in\u00a0Takayama.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sanno_festival_Matsuri\"><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\">Sanno\u00a0festival<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">Matsuri<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"notranslate\">If you are not in\u00a0Takayama\u00a0during the celebration of the great festival\u00a0Sann\u014d<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">Matsuri\u00a0(April 14 and 15), you can also learn about it at the\u00a0Takayama\u00a0exhibition center<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">Yatai<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">Kaikan. It holds an exhibition of 4 of the 23 floats used during the festival that dates back to the 17th century.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">And in the\u00a0Karakuri\u00a0museum, you can see both the mechanical dolls (Karakuri<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"notranslate\">ningy\u014d) that are placed on festival floats and more than 200 masks of Japanese lions. There are more in the area near the outdoor folkloric museum\u00a0Hida\u00a0no Sato.
